Summary of The Two Ill Men---1

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One was allowed to sit up in his bed for half an hour every afternoon to help drain fluid from his lungs, and his bed was next to the room's only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. Every day, when the man next to the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. Then the man on the other side would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scenes. Days and weeks passed. One morning the nurse found the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. The other man asked to move next to the window. When he looked out the window, it faced a blank wall. The man asked the nurse why his roommate can describe such beautiful things outside the window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and perhaps he just wanted to encourage him.

Summary of The Two Ill Men(2)

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. Every day the men talked for hours on end. They spoke of all kinds of things surrounding them. What set them apart from each other is that one man was allowed to sit up each afternoon; however, the other man had to spend all his time lying on his bed. Thus, every afternoon when the man near the window could sit up and look the beautiful scenery out of the window, he would describe what he saw to the other man who only could imagine what he heard. Days and weeks passed. One morning, the nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the man by the window had died peacefully in his sleep. After the nurse called somebody to take the body away, the other man asked to be moved next to the window. When there is no one around the man, he painfully propped himself up on one elbow to take the first look outside. But he turned out to find that the window faced a blank wall. Not until the nurse told him the dead man is a blind did he realize that what his friend told him is all his imagination. His purpose was to encourage him.
