How does one define "wealth" in a society?
Few of us will agree that "money" is a proper unit for measuring
the success of a country; most of us understand that the greatest treasure
is, in fact, the bond of brotherhood between all citizens. This priceless
compassion, I believe, is the utmost "pressing need" in our
prosperous Taiwanese society.
Reaching this goal will require the drive of every member of our nation, and we young people, as the newest generation, have the the obligation to pitch in. What we can do is nothing as poetic or vague as the phrase "compassion," though. It is straight-forward and simple, just like chores or exams. Little things, such as giving up a seat on a bus, helping an old lady across the street, or smiling "Good morning!" to our neighbors, can go a long way in forming close ties with our fellow Taiwanese. After all, at present we are only students; we lack the financial means to help building a perfect society. But we have a youthful heart, and the will to ride the wind to fulfill a dream. So let's make contributing to our society a common dream, open our hearts, and take action! |
